Shirley finishes on Fairbury podium during Illinois Speedweek
Brian Shirley and his Bob Cullen Racing No. 3s invaded a quintet of bullrings in his home state of Illinois for five-nights of FloRacing Night in America and Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS)-sanctioned action.
Losing the Illinois Speedweek opener at LaSalle (Ill.) Speedway on Tuesday to rain, Shirley kicked off a busy stretch on Wednesday night at Spoon River Speedway (Banner, Ill.). With 39 entries on hand, the 45-year-old timed in fourth overall in his time trial group before earning a runner-up heat race finish. Shirley took the green flag seventh in the 50-lapper but faded outside of the top-10 in the closing circuits to finish 14th.
Additional rainouts the following two nights at Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway and Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway delayed Shirley’s return to LOLMDS competition until Saturday night’s visit to Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway. Unloading for the $30,000-to-win Illinois Speedweek finale against a stacked 48-car field, Shirley topped the speed charts in time trials with a 12.882 second lap. A heat race victory placed Shirley’s Thomason Express-backed Longhorn Chassis on the pole for the 60-lap finale, in which he finished third after pacing the opening 12 circuits.
The Chatham, Ill.-native is currently tied for seventh in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series standings.
